Two months later… the sink without the tap

the bees from our honey
So the last weeks have not been easy. We are still living in the hotel next to the Church. The fleas actually have returned over the last few days (the count for flea bites are at about 30 for me, and less than 10 for Melaine) – it could be worse. The MSF guys have been a huge help. They introduced us to Pascal – a guard and gardener for MSF, but also a farmer that actually grows things here: tomato, cucumber, salad, basil, onion, egg-plant, even carrots (which are having a hard time in the clay soil, but are nevertheless delicious).I have high hopes to work with him in the near future. The church next door has turned down their Nazi-Priest at night and even the rats in our room seem more healthy… at least their poop has been getting bigger.
The best news of the week was honey! Wild honey – with a few bees and parts in it – but super delicious and great for my throat that has been hurting, and very cheap sold to us by Pascal in a big, re-used water bottle. Also I am getting used to doing laundry in my bucket. It’s almost some kind of meditation, and that is certainly needed here because… the house is not ready after two weeks of work. The living room is yellow instead of white (ok, it’s not the worst, but yellow is the color of the insane, and I am already much too close to that state these days anyways). The bathroom and kitchen are not ready. The mosquito nets not installed, the water tank and pump not even delivered, but my favorite was the sink without the tap. Two weeks they have been working on building a sink for the kitchen now (something my dad could have done in a couple hours). Two weeks later all we have is a sink on concrete, next to a wall, WITHOUT A TAP! Okay, Okay – this is Mbandaka. Things are not easy. For now all we can do is hope that the guys get the water going this weeks, so we can move in… everything else they can work on while we are there.
Fingers crossed.
